September Fairytale by Leyna-art September Fairytale by Leyna-art
Playing variations on a theme with my Due South fanart painting "September Country" [link]
I wanted to try something a little more like Maxfield Parrish's fairytale illustrations, but in my own style.

I've decided to put this in the general digital art category, and not in fanart, because when I paint fanart AUs, I like to consider the characters and how they would be translated into this new universe. For this painting I used the actors as references for two fairytale characters rather than depicting Fraser and Ray in a fairytale setting. It's a hair-splitting definition, I know :)

That said, though, I wasn't sure which gallery to use. I've put it into Landscapes and Scenery, because there is a lot of scenery in the picture, but I'm happy to receive advice.

Painter X & Wacom tablet - and many hours:) The characters likenesses (and Dief, the half-wolf character) referenced from screenshots from episodes from seasons 3 and 4 of Due South. Inspiration from Maxfield Parrish's fairytale paintings, [link] The scenery is mostly from my imagination, or loosely referenced. I don't use texture brushes, because I like figuring out how to paint everything myself.

Edit. Fixed some rough bits (thanks *samjo989!, and a costume issue (since the previous cape didn't attach in a sensible fashion)

This is beautiful! Parrish is my all-time favourite artist - you've done him and his style a great justice with this piece, it's just wonderful. :)

I often skip over the scenery so this one was such a great opportunity to spend some time on that rather than just the people.

Nice detail.

The faces look more detailed then the bodies though.

Thanks :) Yes, I referenced the faces closely because they are portraits of specific characters, but tried not to rely on references too much for their bodies - but I need more practice at that!

Thanks. I haven't painted any scenery in ages, and the wolf is a first for me, so I'm pretty happy :)

Beautiful! I love the sunset colours, I think you've done that amazingly well and it lends such a magical warmth to the scene, to the trees and the meadow and the snowy peaks.

One thing I thought looked a little strange was some of the outlining. I'm not sure how best to say it, and I realise it could be a deliberate stylistic decision on your part -- but: The standing character's face and pointing hand don't look like they're part of the picture; I think they don't blend in because of heavier outlining on them compared to the clothes and so on? Also, the outlining on the left side of the tree in the bottom right looks a little out of place to me.

The only other things are that the kneeling character's head looks a little too big, perhaps... and their postures look a little stiff. I think that's because their shoulders are pulled back, their backs are straight -- almost a military kind of posture. I don't know the characters, though, so that again could be intentional.

Other than that, this is a beautiful piece. What I really like about it is the colouring/lighting, and I think you've done the meadow grass/flowers very well.

Hope some of this is useful =)

Thanks for taking the time to give such thoughful comments. I'm very happy with the way the colours turned out, particularly :)

The outlining is a stylistic thing, but I can get a bit carried away with it! I'll have another look at the painting with that in mind.

The figures look a bit stiff and awkward, to me, too. I suspect only practice and time, is going to help me there :) I have a bad tendency of making heads too large in proportion to their bodies, though. Thanks!

Not familiar with the fandom, but this is *stunning*! I love Parrish, and I think you really captured what makes his work appealing! :)

Thank you! I'm very pleased with how this turned out - I can see lots of areas for improvement, but I learnt a lot, too. The colours are exactly what I wanted, so that was a big plus :)
